L’il Dippers
(6 months - 2 years)

Explore the water environment with your baby. A special time for bonding and learning together. All aspects of water orientation will be explored.

Babies who are not toilet trained must wear swim diapers.

Gym and Swim
(2 - 5 years)

This program is divided into two Gym and Swim classes according to age. The half hour gym program consists of developmental skills in movement education, gymnastics and games. The half hour pool session focuses on water adjustment, swimming skills, and safety education for both parent and child.

Gym and Swim
(6 - 7 years)

During each one hour session, children participate in a half hour of gym instruction followed by a half hour of swim instruction.

In the pool, children will be divided intogroups among 3 to 4 teachers according to swimming ability.

Note to Parents: Instructors are available at the end of each class to discuss your child’s progress.

Youth Aquatics
(8 - 12 years)

Enroll your child in swim lessons at the YMCA. You will feel more comfortable when your child is around water at the beach or by the pool.

Each pool session lasts 45 minutes. There is no pressure on your child to complete a level of instruction in 8 weeks - they can do it in 4 weeks or 12 weeks.

An extra 10-15 minutes is available at the end of classes to allow instructors to talk with parents or to help out in the locker rooms.

Youth Competitive Swim Team
(8 - 16 years)

This program is an introduction to the sport of competitive swimming.
Emphasis is placed on stroke development, endurance and individual achievement of personal goals.

Swimmers will have the opportunity to participate in “Mini Swim Meets” throughout the season to monitor their improved swim progress.

Parents and swimmers are introduced to all the elements of a successful swim meet in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Emphasis is put on the individual swimmer’s progress and not on the winning of events.

Teen After School Club
A social/recreational program for teens with a disability.
Ages 13 yrs & Older

Teen Instruction

Instruction is designed for all levels and interests. We will teach a variety of things such as: stroke correction, lifesaving skills, water polo, and competitive swimming skills.

Bronze Star  
Bronze Star is the pre-Bronze Medallion training standard and excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion.

In Bronze Star, participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills as individuals and in partners. They learn CPR and develop confidence and the lifesaving skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard. Bronze Star is an official training program of the Lifesaving Society – Canada’s lifeguarding experts.

Bronze Medallion (13 years and up or Bronze Star)
Bronze Medallion teaches lifesaving principles and water rescue education, judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness.
Participants are taught tows, carries, defenses and releases, and are prepared for challenging rescues of increasing risk.
Lifesavers will also develop stroke efficiency and endurance.

Bronze Cross (14 years and up)
Pre-requisite: Bronze Medallion
Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in an aquatic facility.

You will learn the difference between lifesaving and life guarding, the principles of emergency procedures and team work. Learn how to rescue a spinal-injured victim and a pulseless victim.

YMCA/LSS Instructor Certification (16 years and up)
Pre-requisite: Bronze Cross
If you’d like to become a swimming instructor, this is the program for you!

Learn the stroke mechanics, principles of teaching techniques and evaluation procedures.
YMCA and Lifesaving Society

Instructor certification will be awarded upon successful completion.

National Lifeguard Service & Standard First Aid (16 years and up)
Pre-requisite: Bronze Cross
The NLS is recognized as the standard measurement of lifeguard performance in Canada.
NLS education is designed to develop a sound understanding of lifeguard principles, good judgment and a mature and responsible attitude toward the role of the lifeguard.

Adult Instruction
Instruction is designed for adults from beginner to advanced levels of swimming. Pick a class and start a lifetime of activity that will keep you in shape and feeling great.

Adult Drop-In
Instruction

Fine tune your strokes, get a few pointers or learn a new skill. Drop in once or as many times as you like. We’ll have instructors on duty each week for your convenience.

Level I Aqua-Fit
This low-to-moderate intensity program is best suited for beginners, older adults, and participants with special medical conditions (e.g., arthritis, post-rehabilitation).

The goal of this program is to improve the overall wellness and functional fitness of participants by providing safe and effective exercises that target cardio-respiratory fitness, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, and the ability to perform activities of daily living.

Level II Aqua-Fit
This intermediate level program is perfect for participants who are looking for a moderate-to-intense work-out. This program aims to improve overall cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance.

Whether you’re looking for a great cross-training opportunity or simply enjoy the water, give Level II Aquafit a try!

Level III Aqua-Fit
This high-intensity program is designed to make you sweat – yes, even in water!!

Techniques such as water running, boxing, and circuit training are used to improve overall cardio-vascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, and body composition.

Participants should come prepared to work hard and have fun!

Workplace Standard First Aid & CPR  
Under the New Brunswick Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Standard First Aid is a requirement for all workplaces in New Brunswick.

This 16-hour course will provide you with the knowledge, judgment and skills needed to respond safely and effectively in an emergency situation. You can register for this course as a work group or individual.

CPR/AED
Register now for the new simplified CPR course with the included defibrillator (AED) training.
The YMCA is one of the few places in the Fredericton area with a defibrillator on site. The current national survival rate for sudden cardiac arrest is less than five percent. An additional 40,000 lives could be saved each year with widespread access to defibrillators.

Adapted Aquatics
On Wednesday evenings, adults with developmental disabilities gather for a recreational swimming program.

Fredericton “Y” Masters  (18 years +)
This competitive swim club meets three mornings a week for fitness while practicing good technique. The workouts include stroke development drills and conditioning set. The program promotes ease of motion and greater efficiency in the four competitive strokes and other swimming styles. Coaching fees are minimal but additional to membership costs.

Aqua-fit Leader
Pre-requisite: Basic Fitness Theory (BFT)
Co-requisite: Group Fitness Leader (GFL)
This course will provide the information for participants to lead all types of aqua-fit and fitness classes. The course will include some sessions in the pool.
